Final Reflection Essay

The Project

My biggest struggle during this project was organization, I’m not naturally a very organized person, and that gets thrown into sharp relief in a group setting. I’m pretty proud that I came up with the idea for the presentation, and also that our group created such an amazing video. The only things I would have changed, was that there were a couple rough transitions and long pauses but other than that I just wish we had longer to work with this subject! I was personally responsible with getting everyone to show up to there appointments and try to manage. Our group had a great atmosphere the whole time, many laughs and good times were had by all I think. I wish I had worked more with the iMovie app on this project, but I think everyone in the group played to their strengths.

The Class

Our readings and films did not really cause me to look at the world differently but it did cause me to look at filming differently, and respect editors and directors a lot more! It also caused me to think differently about the body builders that our project was on, there not all mean and intimidating, there just normal people. I definitely would not have preferred essays. The other WRD classes that I heard about sounded horrible! My speaking is still not great but I did loosen up during this class so thats at least a step in the right direction. I like your style as a teacher, your more laid back approach makes me likely to stay tuned in and not zone out. Also since we are already swamped with homework, the minimum homework and grading policy is absolutely divine. To make the class better I would say more cookie days!!! Or like incorporate like a movie day, you could even have students like watch a movie and pick out the different types of shots for an assignment but thats just extra fluff ideas, other than that, keep up the good work!

Ted Talk Break Down

For my Ted Talks I watched, "How to Not be Ignorant About the World," "Why Does the Universe Exist?" and "A Park Underneath the Hustle and Bustle of New York City."  Each of these talks were absolutely fascinating, some were presented better than others however.
In "How to Not be Ignorant About the World," the ideas were elementary but well formed and made sense witht the speech. The basics of the talk being that everyone assumes he worst when in general things are getting better. Basically do not worry as much, things will get better and are currently better than they seem. The first speaker, Hans Rosling, was a perfect speaker, he joked, got people laughing, had the audience do little activities, and exuded a great public view of himself. He is obviously a well versed public speaker and was not nervous during his speech. His son, Ola Rosling, on the other hand was not as well-spoken as his father. He was visibly more nervous, did not possess the same on-stage presence as his father, was a little bit harder to understand (mostly due to the accent) and did not involve the audience in the same way as his father did. Over-all I think that if Ola had done the presentation on his own it would have worked more to his favor because he is not the caliber as his father when it comes to public-speaking and presenting right after him brings this to light.
"Why Does the Universe Exist?" this talk I was quite excited to watch. I always find existance lectures to be interesting but this one was not my favorite. The speaker although confident and knowledgable came off nervous at times beause he stuttered, which is usually pretty common with science lectures because the speaker gets so hyped up that its like their mouth short circuits. Another thing is that the lecturer seemed very uppity as he was lecturing. He constantly dropped names and referenced various scientists and experiments the average person would not know about. His thought pattern in presenting this piece was also kind of scattered. I sadly have this problem when I give speeches too but still it makes it harder for the audience to follow along.
The last one I watched was "A Park Underneath the Hustle and Bustle of New York." This one was quite interesting actually. Thy are attempting to create a green space in an old underground warehouse and leave it open for the public. I found this to be an awesome idea! But the speaker came off a little nervous and also a little dull. He got up presented and left in pretty short order. Although the idea and project he is working on is revolutionary and mind-blowing, his presentation does not show that. I would suggest that they get a more charismatic speaker the next time they have to give a lecture on their project.
All of the videos I watched were fascinating in their own way but some stood out more than the others purely because their speaker was much more personable to the audience than the other speakers were. A good presenter can make any speech (good or bad) fly where even the best idea can be sunk by a bad presentation.

Celebritie's Nudes Leak: Scandal or Crime?

Scandal or crime? That is Scott Mendelson's argument in his article "Jennifer Lawrence Nude Photo Leak Isn't A 'Scandal'. It's a Sex Crime." Mendelson argues throughout his piece that it is not the actresses' faults for creating these pictures but for the people who hacked the women's various devices to acquire said photos. He also said that the actresses' should NOT apologize what-so-ever for this "leak" because they have nothing to be ashamed of.
I fully support Mendelson in his view that it is not the woman's fault for having taken these pictures but for the perpetrator who took these pictures from a private setting and put them into the public. The actresses' such as Jennifer Lawrence never meant for these to get to the public and did not create these photos with that goal in mind. If we as a the public come together and condemn these women for having taken the pictures, that is like condemning someone for being assaulted. It is never the victim's fault. No one asks to be taken advantage of in any way, whether in the real world or in the media, and these women should not have to apologize for having their own private activities.

First Post!!

Hi Everybody!!
My name is Savannah Leigh Gilbert. I'm originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, but right before high school I moved to Rochester, Minnesota! Culture shock!! Anyway I came to UK to be closer to my family that I have in London, Kentucky ( and maybe to get away from the -30 winters!) So far I'm absolutely loving it at UK and am excited to see what this year has in store for me! For our ice-breaker question : What song would describe your 2014? My answer would be Turn Down For What! So many good memories in 2014 are associated with that song, it will always be a favorite!
